This is a piece of Black Cherry cut from our bush lot, 12" by 9" , in this operation I am pocketing the area I intend to carve the 3D image and text.

photo02

I flipped the plaque over and used a spacer in the area I had just pocketed to engrave and carve the key hole to hang the finished plaque.

photo03

I used a ¼" flat bottom up cut end mill to hogg out or remove unessary material but left .040" above the final cut. You can see the outline of the stork image.

photo04

I changed cutters to a very fine tip tapered ball nose. The tip width is 1/16" or .0625".

photo05

I started the engraving final finish cut in the centre of the image and will follow the oval patern until it reaches the outer edge.

photo06

The tip of the cutter steps over only 8 percent of the diameter at the tip, this relates to removing a path only .006 about the thickness of a piece of paper.

The finish cut with the tapered ball nose took 48 minutes to complete, this gives a very fine finish that requires very little clean up.

photo08

The next step is to engrave the text, here I used a 60 degree V bit double flute which gives me a nice clean cut finish.

photo09

A little closer look at an angle to show the 3D image.

The date on the photos is not the date of production. I finished this December 4 2019

Removing the clamp hold down devices, and getting ready to finish.

photo012

I used a clear satin acrylic spray finish, 4 coats between drying periods.

Looking better.

A view of the back side, the hanging key hole, my name and details regarding where the tree came from and when.

photo015

A close up of the 3D image and text details, I would have prefered to have the text coloured, perhaps black or dark brown.

Another view of the back side.

The wood is Black Cherry from our woodlot.

The stork and carry bag are 3D carved at about .115" high. The outside border moulding was machined with a ball nose milling cutter and shape was produced by me.
